OUR STORY

Ghana Day in Tampa Bay is a vibrant community celebration honoring Ghanaian culture, heritage and the contributions of Ghana and the African diaspora.

Through music, food, fashion, history and the arts, the festival creates a welcoming place for people to connect, learn and celebrate together.

Presented by the Ghanaian Association of Tampa Bay, Ghana Fest Florida 2026 promotes cultural awareness, unity and meaningful connections across Tampa Bay and beyond.

OUR STORY

The Journey of Ghana

From early European contact to independence and modern democracy, Ghana’s story is one of resilience, leadership and cultural pride.

1471

Portuguese explorers arrive on the Gold Coast, marking the beginning of sustained European contact and coastal trade.

1874

The British formally establish the Gold Coast Colony, while resistance and movements for self-determination continue to grow.

1957

Ghana becomes the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

1960

Ghana becomes a republic, and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah serves as the country’s first President.

1992–1993

A new constitution begins Ghana’s Fourth Republic and restores constitutional multi-party government.

2026

Ghana Day In Tampa Bay launches its maiden celebration, welcoming the Ghanaian and African diaspora from across Florida and neighboring communities.
